Wiles, attended classes at the Arts Students' League where he studied with William Merritt Chase, and then went abroad to complete his studies at the Académie Julian in Paris. When he returned to America, he found an immediate reception for his pictures. He was a painting virtuoso, particularly in transparent watercolor, which suited itself perfectly for its reproduction in the magazines. He also entered New York exhibitions and won many prizes; he became a member of the American Watercolor Society; the Society of American Artists, and was elected a full member of the National Academy in 1897. In the latter part of his life, he concentrated on portraiture, but also painted genre and landscape subjects." Wiles was also a member of the Pastel Society of America, but his pastels are rarely found -- probably because this medium is rather fragile. Out of 242 works listed by the Smithsonian Institute Research Information System, only three are pastels, all female portraits: "Reverie", "Study of a Woman" and "To Miss Webb".Works by Irving Ramsey Wiles are in the collections of: - the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York City - the National Gallery of Art, Washington D.C. - the Long Island Museum of American Art, - the Museum of the National Academy of Design, New York City - the North Carolina Museum of Art, Raleigh - the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C. - the Terra Foundation for American Art, Chicago

Sheafer, 1973http://www.metmuseum.org/Emma Alexander Sheafer was the daughter of the banker, James Strange Alexander (1865-1932). In 1914, she married Lesley G. Sheafer, a stockbroker with the firm of Jesup & Lamont; she was of Scottish ancestry, while her husband had German ties. They spent their summers in Germany, where they bought many of the objects in their collection. Mrs. Sheafer continued to collect after her husband's death in 1956, and at her death in 1973 at the age of 82, she left a collection of fine German and French mid-18th century furniture, porcelain and silver, and American and French paintings to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The Sheafers lived for many years in an apartment at 45 East 66th Street.
